You don't need to catch everyone for your business to be
successful. With your branded information available on your various social
media sites it is much easier for people who are interested in your product or
service to find you. It is fairly simple to target geographically, many of the
social media sites allow you to search by keywords, some even have specific geographic targeting capabilities.

Re: The Power of an Online Reputation

Building your reputation online is very essential thing. In this instance the one page flat resume is all they need since they only need to know who you've worked for.

On the other hand, entrepreneurials branding their business do better ditching boring resumes and getting social 2011 savvy!

Re: Don’t Believe Your Own Hype | In Love with Insincerity, and Yourself on Social Media

The best article on social media I've seen in quite a while. No one wants to hear the truth. I have never believed what social media is perpetuated as. It's simply not true. It allows people who "can't" to "can" in a reality that only exists to them. Step away from social media to meet the same people in person and you'll find that in most cases it's an underwhelming experience based on inaccuracies. That's reality. You can't gloss over the reality of human nature.

Re: LinkedIn Marketing Debate – Should You Think of Your LinkedIn Profile as a Resume

You make some excellent suggestions and I encourage everyone reading this post to make use of them to build an engaging LinkedIn profile.

But if your only reason for not thinking of your LinkedIn profile as your resume is that your resume is bland, shouldn't you update your resume?

If your resume is not engaging and intriguing, it's not doing its job. I'd like to start seeing more interesting resumes as well. You can't fill them with apps or sacrifice professionalism for formatting, but your resume has the same purpose as your profile: to make the reader want to know more.

Re: 10 Job Hunting Mistakes Students Make

Prospective, not perspective. I completely agree that email is king. It is always necessary to stay on a recruiter or hiring manager's radar while they are making their final hiring decision. However, regardless of whether or not you secured the job, having a traditional thank-you note in-the-mail can leave a lasting impression.

Say that you were fortunate enough to be hired. Well, the hiring manager, now your co-worker, appreciates your thoughtful nature and you already have a friend at your new organization!

Conversely, if you were turned down for the open position, sending the thank-you will act as a lasting impression that will keep your name, qualifications and experience at the forefront of the recruiter's mind when a new position opens up.

This post might be worth 50¢ soon!

Re: The 44¢ Investment

It's an interesting take, but as a recruiter, I find this advice outdated and counter-intuitive, especially for job seekers. The job search is time-bound so it's important that your thank you is timely more than anything else and a same-day email is the best method. At the job I left before starting my company, there were 136,000 employees so mail was never timely and every snail mail thank you was always received after I made a hiring decision. Today, I am an entrepreneur with two virtual contractors, but because I use a PO Box, I only get mail one to times a week. As someone who spent a lot of time designing my new office to be anti-clutter, I do not keep paper, but I do keep emails.

I think cards are great for selfless acts that are not time bound, but are limited in usefulness in 2011. Just my 2 cents (no pun intended)!

Re: What can a Gen-Y gain from international experience?

I wish I had studied abroad when I had the chance..

Re: 5 Tips for Writing a Great Personal Essay

Erik, thanks for the contribution to eBranding Me. You make an excellent point when suggesting that students tend to use pre-written clichés that have been done time-and-time again. Do something different, something unique, and stand out from the crowd.

Furthermore, I followed your link to "College Essay Tips" and found some very useful information. Thank you for sharing. I agree with your points 100% around writing a good essay. One point I would like to make is to avoid cliches. In fact, I suggest skipping cliches all together. Most admissions staff have heard their round of good (or bad) cliche's and a student should come up with something unique, but honest content when they choose to write a essay. I have posted a few good essay tips on my site: http://www.collegeessaytips.or...

Cheers!

Re: Bubble2Boardroom

Keith, So glad you were there to witness the phenomenon that was bubble2boardroom.
